Il cinema come sollievo dell'anima ! Convinto che in un periodo difficile si debbano girare soltanto film drammatici, un giovane regista cinematografico, durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, decide di girare un film ispirato alla vita dei senzatetto, lui che è abituato a girare sempre commedie. Travestitosi da barbone, inizia a frequentare i quartieri più poveri della città per cercare di conoscere gli ambienti e le persone di cui vorrebbe parlare. Con l'aiuto di una aspirante attrice riesce fare delle esperienze 'sul campo'. Dopo varie peripezie, si trova coinvolto in un errore giudiziario ed è condannato ai lavori forzati. Cerca di svelare la propria identità, ma non viene creduto. Durante la permanenza in carcere si rende conto che i detenuti trovano sollievo alla sofferenza di essere rinchiusi solo guardando film di cartoni animati. Alla fine viene riconosciuta la sua innocenza e viene rilasciato. Questa esperienza gli servirà molto per capire che in momenti difficili l'essere umano ha bisogno di gioia e, quindi, decide di tornare alle sue commedie.

Mrs. Jumbo sadly looks on how babies are delivered by stork to colleague circus-animals but as even a baby elephant makes a most cumbersome package, so her so is just last to arrive, but soon becomes a laughing stock for the jealous herd because of his more then jumbo-size ears, so he gets nick-named Dumbo. When she can't stomach the public making fun of her firstborn, she is locked up as mad elephant, and the taunted kid finds himself all alone; well, except for a self-appointed mentor-protector, Timothy Q. Mouse -subsize, yet ideal to scare the jealous herd- who keeps motivating Dumbo. Alas inspiring the circus director to make Dumbo the top (literally) of an elephant pyramid stunt literally brings the house down, so he's demoted to clown. When Dr. Doug Lee fails to save the life of navy pilot Swede Larson, who blacked out and crashed after entering a steep dive, the flyer's friends take an immediate dislike to him and disparage his efforts to learn more about the problem by becoming a flyer himself. Lee's new superior officer, Dr. Lance Rogers, also exhibits resentment toward the presumptuous newcomer. They ultimately become friends and form a mutual bond of personal and professional respect when their research develops a high altitude flying suit which they hope will prevent the kind of blackouts that killed Swede. Sophisticated New York couple David and Annie Smith have an unusual marriage with an inordinate number of rules and regulations. One rule entitles them to ask each other one question per month which the other must answer completely honestly. Annie asks David if he would marry her again if he could have the time over again and David confides that he misses his freedom and so probably wouldn't. Later that day, an official from the town where they got married calls to see David. He explains that owing to a state boundary dispute, all couples married between 1936 and 1939 in the county were not legally married.
