In 1988, the abusive and deranged Nun Ursula is the principal of a Catholic boarding school in Barcelona. Her class and dorm mates Joanna, Christine, Eulalia, Zoe and Susan fight with the nun and drown her in a bathtub. The six teenagers dump her body in a lake with holy water and make a pact of silence. Eighteen years later, the spirit of the nun is released from the lake and possesses the daughter of Mary, Eve, seeking revenge against the former students and killing each one of them like their saint patrons did to achieve the forgiveness of God through punishment and penitence, pain and sacrifice.

In 14th-century England, a young monk breaks his vow of chastity and flees the wrath of his bishop and fellow monks. A fugitive priest, he then witnesses the murder of a traveling performer—and subsequently, the mourning of actor by his fellow troupe members. He eventually becomes initiated into the troupe as a player, replacing the murdered man. They travel from town to town performing their standard morality play. They arrive in a town where a boy has been killed and a young deaf-mute girl has been imprisoned for the crime—sentenced to death for witchcraft and murder. Discarding the expected bible stories, the actors stage a performance based on the crime. Through the performance of the play, they discover that the townspeople know the young woman did not, in fact, commit the murder. The stage becomes a place where vital human truth is told. Thus, simultaneously, the fugitive priest comes to terms with his own crime and makes a powerful sacrifice, thereby redeeming himself.

Margot, the enthusiastic young woman heading up the research team, decides to go to the spot and check out this phenomenon. Meanwhile Edouard, our hero, studies the flora and fauna of the tree tops in the rainforest. He perches on an enormous net that stretches over the still pure, unadulterated forest that spreads out beneath him. He discovers a naked little twelve-year old girl seated on the net. He covers her with a broad banana leaf and asks where she comes from. She quickly replies, in perfect French 'from another world'.
